World War III

Someday deep in the mekongs of our mind
We must argue our conscience carefully
To the bodies in the flaws of our reasoning
And stop looking for the hole in ourselves
Through which our lives escape.

The fillings of our teeth have ached too long
With the brass and lead rumble of arms
And the blood cannot run backwards forever.
The fingers have been shot off the extended band.
World War III is between our wildest dreams
And our hydrogen death wish.
